The Ottawa Police Service C4K team are a bunch of big fit guys, they can’t really beleive that they have been beat every year by a “bunch of skinny lawyers” – will this year be different?
The Ottawa Police, came in numbers to help launch Enbridge Canoe for Kids this year, they are longtime supporters of the work CLK does in the community as the programs CLK offers help to give disadvantaged youth positive options that help them stay on the right track. Superintendent Delany also mentioned the connection OPS shares with CLK in retired Inspector Mike Johnson. Mike and all 6 of his brothers add tended Christie Lake in the 40’s and 50’s and credit the organization for helping them to reach for more. Chief Bordeleau is a strong supporter of CLK, helping out wherever he can and many members of the OPS have volunteered on the CLK Board of Directors including Dan Delany, Deputy Chief Gilles Larochelle, and Mike Johnson.
The Launch kick starts this community fundraiser with sponsorships which this year totaled $53,200, team registration opens today and Christie Lake Kids invite the community to climb on board and help change the lives of kids living in poverty in our community. Canoe for Kids is a fun family event that takes to the waves on Saturday June 4th 2011 at Mooney’s Bay to raise $100,000 for Ottawa’s needy kids. Teams of 6 or more people register online at www.christielakekids.com and then share the news for months, raising funds online and in person, all teams come together on June 2nd 2012 for the big race day challenge!
This year’s event will be Chaired by Steve Monuk and Christie Lake Kids brand new media sponsor LiVE 88.5 Kids Fund is bringing all kinds of cool starting with having Chelsea Miller and the new LiVE Lounge CDs at the launch. “This new partnership will really help us to promote this event, it’s our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year – we just know that LiVE is going to help us max it out with 40 racing boats, each raising their target of $2,000”, stated Carole Gagne Ince, Executive Director of Christie Lake Kids. Opening ceremonies featured a Youth speaker from Christie Lake Kids who told a moved audience of his journey through CLK to being accepted to university, a thought he didn’t dare to dream until he was encouraged by CLK staff to pursue”. The launch also featured a hot breakfast thanks to Enbridge, the Title Sponsor; and cheque presentations from other leading sponsors such as CGI, Doyle Homes, Scotia McLeod, NavCan, Lakeside Gas. Dignified guests included City Councilor Maria McRae, and Event Chair Steve Monuk.
Teams can sign up to meet the challenge of Lawyers for Kids at the event launch or online at www.christielakekids.com/events – the winning team will have the double satisfaction of helping kids and showing those lawyers their own brand of justice.
Since 1922, Christie Lake Kids has been building skills and changing lives to help kids break the cycle of poverty. They provide more than 600 children and youth living in poverty in Ottawa with free afterschool, weekend and holiday programs in arts, athletics and personal development with all equipment and transportation provided.

Introduction:
Last year on Sat. Feb. 5th I organized a small but keenly contested 4 on 4, full equipment, outdoor hockey tournament in support of Christie Lake Kids Charity. There were 3 teams who were sponsored with swag (T-shirts, beer glasses, hats) from 3 local craft breweries (Beaus, Hogsback and Kitchisippi). Each of the players donated a minimum of $20 to play (this year the fee will be $40.00 per player). With extra donations at the after party (last year hosted by The Corner Bar & Grill in Westboro), a total of $700 was donated to Christie Lake Kids Charity. This was a small, simple event to test the popularity and logistics of an outdoor hockey tourney. The players were so enthusiastic and have said that many of their friends want to play this year so we are increasing the number of teams to six. This year we hope to make approximately $2000.00 for the Charity.
Partnership With Local Craft Brewers:
We would like to match a local craft brewer with each of the 6 teams and name each team after the brewery/brewpub. There will be a maximum of 10 players on each team and I am asking the participating Craft Brewer to donate 10 items that we can give as a gift to the players that play and fundraise for the tournament. The craft brewers are also welcome to donate some funds to the local Charity with us (optional). If the after party location can allow it, I would like to have each of the 6 craft brewers represented with a small keg of their finest for beer tasting.
The Local Craft Brewers we would like to participate:
Beaus
Hogsback
Kitchisippi
Clocktower
Brasseurs Du Temps
Millstreet
Ashton Brew Pub
Broadhead
Come down and see Darcy play on the Beau’s team!
